Those not familiar with Clemson Tigers football got a huge dose last year, as the program was constantly on primetime television and seemed to silence naysayers in each successive game until they got to the biggest game of the year in Glendale. Led by Deshaun Watson in a game many experts had them favored to win, the Tigers gave it all they had until the final second rolled off. Unfortunately for them and their fans, it wouldn’t be enough as Clemson ultimately came up short.
Watson’s supporting cast went all out for him all night as their leader on offense would end up completing 63 percent of his passes on his way to a 405-yard passing performance while contributing another 73 yards on the ground. It was a brilliant game capping a season where Watson would toss 35 touchdowns and run for another 12. Had it not been for this guy by the name of Derrick Henry, we may have seen Watson hoist the Heisman Trophy.
But Watson will be around at least one more year, and if the Tigers can get past the Florida State Seminoles again this season, there’s no reason to believe they won’t have a strong chance of finding their way back into the final game of the College Football Playoff.
Watson had a great showing in Clemson’s spring game. That shouldn’t surprise anyone, but the contest showed they’ve reloaded on defense as well. Their schedule is very favorable, and Watson is probably the favorite to win the Heisman Trophy. He’s one year older, one year better and more experienced. Don’t expect the Clemson dominance to slow down this year.
