On Saturday, Tom Brokaw, who is best known for being the anchor and managing editor of NBC Nightly News from 1982-2004, spoke at Ole Miss‘ graduation. Despite being a graduate of the University of South Dakota, Brokaw appealed to the crowd by taking a shot at Ole Miss’ SEC rival, the University of Alabama.
Tom Brokaw at #OleMiss commencement: “If I was speaking at Alabama’s commencement, I’d have to use smaller words and shorter sentences.”

I would assume that someone helped Brokaw out with that joke, but if it was all his, then he’s a savage. As you can imagine, the folks over in Tuscaloosa didn’t appreciate the zing as much as the rest of the country and responded with this.
“Thirty-six percent of the freshman class at the University of Alabama has an ACT score of 30 or higher. This places Alabama in the top 5% in the country. Our numbers speak for themselves.”
Leave it to the Alabama faithful to get defensive over a harmless joke. Who cares if it’s really true? Brokaw got the desired laughs, end of story.
