Darrell K. Royal And The Legacy Of A Legend

The immortals aren’t supposed to perish. Long after they’re done stalking a sideline, calming boosters and tolerating fans, the titans of college football dispense sage advice inside stadiums bearing their names. They are legends among us, kings of a sport quick to idolize and desperate for results. And this morning, we lost another. Darrell K. [...]

College Football Head Coaches In Trouble In 2012

Ten College Football Sleepers For The Remainder Of The Season

College Football Sleepers

college football
Marco Garcia-US PRESSWIRE

It’s an odd college football season. There’s a presumptive favorite in Tuscaloosa, an assumed challenger in Eugene and a bevy of programs hoping their one-loss record sits well with voters should either of those two stumble.

And the sleepers?

Usually these squads are at a tier beneath the elite. They’re middle of the road teams who might get hot for a season or finally cash in on a 5-star recruit.

In 2012 though, September defeats pushed high-profile schools to the back of the BCS line and hot seat talk overshadowed production. In mid-to-late October, as these teams creep toward the national conversation again, are they truly sleepers?

I believe so, partly because the Alabama Crimson Tide and Oregon Ducks are on a voters’ crash course and ruling a one-loss program out of the title chase six games in seems a little overkill. USC and Oklahoma carry cache. They aren’t sleepers in the normal sense but in this crazy, hard to pinpoint year of college football, the Trojans and Sooners qualify.

This list contains a few non-BCS squads as well. I’ve always wondered though if fans of perennial sleepers enjoy the status or fear the looming money-whip. Turn a sleeper into a contender and your coach is headed for a campus with a nicer golf course and more zeros in the paycheck. Was the Liberty Bowl victory worth it?

As much as reputation helps make a sleeper a dangerous foe, the wins trump all. Western Kentucky isn’t admired because Willie Taggart might receive an SEC offer this winter. They’re beloved for only losing to Alabama and LSU in the last calendar year.

And now, onto the countdown of the ten college football sleepers remaining in this 2012 season.

An opening week loss at the Iowa State Cyclones and the Golden Hurricane haven’t lost since. They’re laying waste to Conference USA and travel to Arkansas on November 3rd. Think the Razorback faithful want to see that loss at home?

Nelson Chenault-US PRESSWIRE

Not so much a sleeper anymore, Willie Taggart’s stingy squad is 5-1 with a Sun Belt game advantage on September darling Louisiana-Monroe. Every win increases their profile and ups the starting price of Taggart’s salary at his next school.

8. Iowa Hawkeyes

iowa
Mike Carter-US PRESSWIRE

Is it possible that an offensive coordinator living off letting Vince Young do his own thing and a notoriously overpaid head coach might win a Big Ten division? The Hawkeyes already beat Michigan State with a trip to Michigan in late November the tell-tale matchup.

5 of 11

7. Penn State Nittany Lions

penn state
Evan Habeeb-US PRESSWIRE

Quietly, Bill O’Brien’s rebuild in Happy Valley includes a 4-2 record and second place in the Big Ten Leaders division. Should they finish solely behind Ohio State, the Nittany Lions would qualify for the conference championship game. That, just the thought, is miraculous.

6 of 11

6. USC Trojans

usc
Steven Bisig-US PRESSWIRE

Hovering near the top ten since their loss to Stanford, the Trojans won’t generate many headlines until November 3rd. If Lane Kiffin succeeds in knocking off Oregon, USC is right back in the thick of one-loss entrants to Miami. Beat them twice and they’re booking tickets.

7 of 11

5. Texas Tech Red Raiders

texas tech
Michael C. Johnson-US PRESSWIRE

Fresh off a demolition of West Virginia, the Red Raiders are more than capable of throwing a wrench in an undefeated run for Kansas State. Tommy Tuberville’s team took a defeat from Oklahoma but there’s no reason, with that defense, Texas Tech can’t be considered a possibility for shared conference honors.

8 of 11

4. Michigan Wolverines

michigan
Raj Mehta-US PRESSWIRE

Left for dead following destruction at the hands of Nick Saban, Brady Hoke’s Wolverines are rebounding. By winning the Legends division and then claiming the Big Ten crown – even in an ineligible year for Ohio State – it gives credence to Michigan’s recruiting uptick.

9 of 11

3. Clemson Tigers

clemson
Joshua S. Kelly-US PRESSWIRE

The Tigers need another Florida State loss in the Atlantic Division to bypass the Seminoles but at this point, would you rather bet on Jimbo Fisher? Clemson hosts Virginia Tech this weekend in a matchup that makes or breaks both programs in 2012.

10 of 11

2. Oklahoma Sooners

oklahoma
Tim Heitman-US PRESSWIRE

It speaks to the parity in college football that three teams on this sleeper list sport very real chances of winning their conferences. In Oklahoma, a loss to Kansas State stunted progress but demolitions of Texas Tech and Texas means Bob Stoops’ team is a West Virginia defeat of the Wildcats away from being tied for first. This isn’t the squad that struggled with UTEP any longer.

11 of 11

1. Oregon State Beavers

oregon state
Douglas C. Pizac-US PRESSWIRE

Ranked eighth in the country and known more for their In-N-Out exploits than on-field prowess. Mike Riley’s squad has overtaken USC as the only thing standing between Oregon and a fourth consecutive Pac 12 title.

Official Rant Sports College Football Top 25: Week Eight

top 25
Michael C. Johnson-US PRESSWIRE

The second college football weekend in October provided a slate of games where conference pretenders started to cast an eye toward the hardwood and the elite survived. In terms of upsets, what the Texas Tech Red Raiders did to the West Virginia Mountaineers in Lubbock should be classified as a felony. Tommy Tuberville’s defense under Art Kaufman’s direction has turned Mike Leach’s old outpost into a dangerous Big 12 locale. Can they maintain this frenetic improvement?

In Baton Rouge, the LSU Tigers and South Carolina Gamecocks battled for national positioning and Les Miles found out he really doesn’t need Playstation numbers from Zach Mettenberger to win. He can rely on freshman running back Jeremy Hill instead.

North to South Bend, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish slugged through the rain with the Stanford Cardinal and a goal line stand kept Brian Kelly’s program undefeated. A review of Stepfan Taylor’s attempt to tie the game in overtime wasn’t overturned and perhaps there’s something to that Irish luck.

The Oklahoma Sooners annihilated the Texas Longhorns in the Red River Shootout, a moniker that befits only the team sporting crimson and white. David Ash may have suffered a broken wrist, Damien Williams scored from 95 yards and Blake Bell is the epitome of a fantasy football touchdown thief.

Mike Riley’s Oregon State Beavers bested the BYU Cougars without their starting quarterback and as is tradition in 2012, celebrated at In-N-Out Burger. I’m not sure there’s a better recruiting pitch to high school athletes at the moment than a coach willing to shell out for Animal Style orders and chocolate shakes.

Mack Brown's team sits at a precarious 4-2 with the Baylor Bears headed to Austin next week. It's becoming more difficult for Brown to term the disaster of 2010 a fluke, this is who the Longhorns are under him sans an elite signal-caller.

In the arena of recruiting momentum, Saturday's decimation of the Baylor Bears by Gary Patterson's team means more than losing their quarterback to DWI. That's a statement win for a program in need of some good news.

Johnny Manziel needed all 59 points on Saturday to silence Louisiana Tech. His sandlot style is fascinating and the LSU Tigers offer a litmus test for the rising Aggies.

The Bearcats have yet to lose in 2012 and the only headlines they receive are about Butch Jones accepting a higher-profile job. Between Brian Kelly and now Jones, I wouldn't worry about the next hire if the latter exits.

19. Texas Tech Red Raiders

Holding a Dana Holgorsen offense to fourteen points deserves plenty of praise and though Tuberville appeared a bad fit in Lubbock before, he's probably not itching for an SEC return anymore.

The Cardinals prevailed over Pitt this weekend but I'm starting to wonder whether Charlie Strong's name coming up daily in coaching conversations affects his locker room.

Dabo Swinney's squad will have had two weeks to prepare for the disappointing Virginia Tech Hokies. This is a classic Clemson game; blow out Frank Beamer's team or mind-boggingly lose as only the Tigers can.

Dan Mullen is usually a talker and that's why his Lane Kiffin-like personality 180 has me confused. These Bulldogs are underrated and an outside threat to Alabama in the SEC West. What gives?

Fresh off crushing Boston College, the 'Noles face their in-state nemesis Miami. If Al Golden, who I believe is gone at the end of 2012 from Coral Gables, beats Jimbo Fisher, Tallahassee could erupt.

The 'Ole Ball Coach couldn't get past Les Miles in Death Valley but hoisting the crystal football in January is still possible. South Carolina's matchup with Florida this weekend might be the biggest game of the year.

There are the Trojans, just hanging around and waiting for one-loss teams to come back to them. Think Lane Kiffin and his staff have already taken a look at the Notre Dame film?

Douglas C. Pizac-US PRESSWIRE

Mike Riley is the best. Nice guy, lifer in Corvallis and an In-N-Out aficionado. I imagine the Beavers locker room is a fun place to be in 2012.

7. Ohio State Buckeyes

Pat Lovell-US PRESSWIRE

Though the Buckeyes won't be participants in Pasadena this season, Braxton Miller is more than capable of winning some Heisman hardware. This team sits outside the elite but they're scoring at will in year one of Urban Meyer's system. That's a boon for those looking ahead to 2013.

21 of 26

6. LSU Tigers

Left for dead when they struggled at Auburn, LSU rode Jeremy Hill to a clutch victory over South Carolina. If the rushing attack looks like that weekly, the Crimson Tide aren't breezing through the SEC West.

Ames, Iowa is a tricky place to nab victories. Bill Snyder's crew accomplished it though and control their own Big 12 destiny. I don't have any adoring adjectives left for the man.

4. Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Matt Cashore-US PRESSWIRE

Drenched and defensive, that's what Notre Dame looked like on Saturday. If you don't think an undefeated Notre Dame is playing for the BCS National Championship no matter their competition, you haven't watched college football very long.

24 of 26

3. Florida Gators

florida
Don McPeak-US PRESSWIRE

Jeff Driskel's ascendancy under Brent Pease is borderline amazing. He's a weapon under center for the Gators and one they'll need immensely this weekend as Florida welcomes SEC East opponent South Carolina to Gainesville.

25 of 26

2. Oregon Ducks

oregon
Scott Olmos-US PRESSWIRE

Chip Kelly's Ducks travel to Tempe on Thursday for one of those Pac 12 delights. It's a prime setup for Oregon's first loss and just as likely that you're flipping the station at the half because the score is De'Anthony Thomas: 32, Sun Devils: 14.

26 of 26

1. Alabama Crimson Tide

alabama
Denny Medley-US PRESSWIRE

The first scare of Alabama's season happened in A.J. McCarron's knee. Rest easy though Tide fans, even if the quarterback missed the remainder of the year, Nick Saban could tab a sorority girl under center and still gain 250 yards of offense. Alabama travels to Knoxville to pay their respects to Derek Dooley's SEC career this weekend.

Ten Top Games Left To Decide College Football In 2012

bcs
Matthew Emmons-US PRESSWIRE

As deflating as it is to consider, college football’s regular season reaches intermission this weekend with half of the year already in the rearview mirror. The resurgence of Florida Gators and Notre Dame Fighting Irish have surprised while the Florida State Seminoles losing a conference game it shouldn’t seems an annual box checked.

There’s an elite squad in Nick Saban’s Alabama Crimson Tide. Whether they stumble prior to Miami or not likely depends on a wandering LSU Tigers team and Steve Spurrier’s energized South Carolina Gamecocks.

Realignment has rendered predictions both wise and foolish. The West Virginia Mountaineers were presumed Big 12 contenders and the offense hasn’t disappointed. Their transition partner, the TCU Horned Frogs, saw their quarterback leave school to enter a rehab facility. It won’t be a kind second-half to Gary Patterson’s program.

In the SEC, the Texas A&M Aggies faltered against Florida but find itself ranked in October thanks to the playground dazzle of quarterback Johnny Manziel. Between injuries to James Franklin and an arrest for Dorial Green-Beckham, Gary Pinkel simply needs a glass of wine to forget Missouri’s dismal start.

No Big Ten teams are currently ranked in the Coaches Poll, though the Ohio State Buckeyes remain undefeated and ineligible. The Columbus faithful can thank Gene Smith’s foresight for that.

In the Pac 12, the USC Trojans probably won’t fulfill preseason expectations of a title run. Depth and a leaky offensive line in Los Angeles mean the Oregon Ducks require two victories over Lane Kiffin’s squad and a trip to South Beach is booked. That is, unless their Civil War rivals at Oregon State continue their rise from Mike Riley’s hot seat ashes.

Florida State had hoped to squash talk of the ACC’s mark in BCS games with a national title run only to see it undone against North Carolina State.

Even though Alabama has yet to abdicate their throne, this college football season feels like the shocking and the quaky have knocked and are waiting to knock the door down. It’s too planned for Oregon and the Tide to meet, undefeated, Chip Kelly’s offense against Nick Saban’s defense, for the BCS National Championship.

There’s something left out there for fans of this maniacal game before the focus shifts to recruiting and National Signing Day. These ten matchups figure to draw our intrigue, our eyes and most importantly, our words, be they profane or not celebratory.

2 of 11

10. Oregon Ducks v. Oregon State Beavers

oregon state
Jaime Valdez-US PRESSWIRE

Sean Mannion’s injury won’t keep the Oregon State Beavers from enjoying another trip to In-N-Out but a Civil War victory? That sort of win could force the franchise to build a store right outside Mike Riley’s office. Oregon State uses a debilitating rush defense to wear down opponents. Oregon likes to run down your throat or past you at 4.4 speed. Something’s got to give in Corvallis.

The Ducks have notched four straight victories in the bitter in-state rivalry, the previous two by double-digits. Riley’s job is no longer in jeopardy, he could earn a lifetime of fawning by ruining the Oregon’s national title dreams.

3 of 11

9. Notre Dame Fighting Irish v. Oklahoma Sooners

notre dame
Richard Rowe-US PRESSWIRE

In the preseason, this was a nice non-conference matchup between two traditional programs. Now, it’s a significant step on the road to Notre Dame Fighting Irish relevancy. Already installed in the top ten, Brian Kelly is eyeing a contract extension from those gracious South Bend administrators if he delivers a BCS appearance.

The Oklahoma Sooners haven’t been without issue in 2012 and more than likely, a win in Norman requires mistake-free football from Everett Golson. Is he capable?

In contrast, losses to Texas Tech in 2011 and Kansas State in 2012 lessened the Owen Field mystique for Bob Stoops. Oklahoma fans won’t be happy if a second home loss taints the schedule.

4 of 11

8. Oklahoma Sooners v. West Virginia Mountaineers

oklahoma
Tim Heitman-US PRESSWIRE

This was the assumed Big 12 championship prior to the Oklahoma Sooners' loss to the Kansas State Wildcats. Now, it’s a matchup that provides BCS stakes for both programs. A West Virginia Mountaineers win edges them closer to a conference crown while the Sooners prevailing erases some of the disappointment thus far in 2012.

Neither defense has impressed all that much but in the Big 12, outscoring the opponent remains a steady mantra. Landry Jones won’t crumble like he did in late 2011 and if he’s ever going to save his draft stock, this game presents an opportunity.

Track meet in Morgantown? You bring the stop watch, I’ll bring the moonshine.

5 of 11

7. Notre Dame Fighting Irish v. USC Trojans

usc
Matt Cashore-US PRESSWIRE

Over the last two decades, this tilt has meant more to the USC Trojans’ title dreams than to the NBC-propped Notre Dame Fighting Irish. With a revamped defense and a subdued Brian Kelly, Notre Dame might need a win in Los Angeles to assure a BCS appearance. On the flip side, Lane Kiffin’s squad winning out – including the Pac 12 championship – gets them in the BCS Championship conversation. For the first time since 2005 nationally, this game matters.

At the center of an ESPN special report I imagine will be Irish linebacker Manti Te’o. His recruitment surprised when he chose South Bend over the Trojans and BYU Cougars.

6 of 11

6. South Carolina Gamecocks v. Clemson Tigers

clemson
Bob Donnan-US PRESSWIRE

The Battle of the Palmetto State, one of four games highlighted on this list from rivalry weekend, hasn’t been close the last three seasons. Steve Spurrier’s South Carolina Gamecocks posted three straight double-digit victories and with a possible berth in the SEC Championship on the line, the ‘Ole Ball Coach won’t take his foot off the petal. Chad Morris’ offense looked incredible during the first half of the Florida State Seminoles-Clemson Tigers matchup. A redux of that performance coupled with Tajh Boyd’s career night might be the only thing keeping South Carolina from notching their fourth straight win in this series.

7 of 11

5. Florida Gators v. Florida State Seminoles

florida
Brett Davis-US PRESSWIRE

Until Tom O’Brien’s Wolfpack decided to ruin it, folks were dreaming of this game pitting the Sunshine State’s best two programs, undefeated in Tallahassee. Instead, it’s a chance for Jimbo Fisher to save face on a season that’s already being called disappointing by Florida State Seminoles fans. He’s not in danger of a pink slip yet but sooner or later, Fisher must produce on all that recruiting talent.

Will Muschamp has renovated and rebuilt the culture in Gainesville less than a year removed from a 7-6 finish. Should the Florida Gators run their SEC gauntlet, they could be playing Florida State and Alabama in back-to-back weeks.

8 of 11

4. Oregon Ducks v. USC Trojans

oregon
Jayne Oncea-US PRESSWIRE

Another one of the presumed semifinals from August, USC’s loss to Stanford and Oregon’s repetitive explosion probably means the Trojans are underdogs at home. If the Cardinal front seven horrified the USC offensive line, I’d expect similar from a stingy Ducks defense. Does that mean an Oregon victory though? Perhaps not, Matt Barkley is due a signature senior moment.

De’Anthony Thomas quietly moved away from Heisman conversation in late September. The Oregon speedster can recoup some of his buzz by shining in this matchup and again in the conference championship. Should he score in both contests, an invite to New York seems inevitable.

9 of 11

3. Kansas State Wildcats v. West Virginia Mountaineers

kansas state
Scott Sewell-US PRESSWIRE

At present, the Kansas State Wildcats and West Virginia Mountaineers sit atop the Big 12. And they couldn’t be more different. Bill Snyder will attempt to slow Dana Holgorsen’s potent offense and punish them for any turnovers. Geno Smith simply hopes to throw Kansas State off the field and build a two-game lead in the standings.

Both have tentative trap games this weekend as they try not to look toward each other. Kansas State opposes Big 12 upset heathen Iowa State and the Mountaineers get a taste of west Texas dust in Lubbock. The Red Raiders are a small dog according to Vegas, this intrigues me.

10 of 11

2. Alabama Crimson Tide v. LSU Tigers

alabama
John David Mercer-US PRESSWIRE

For the third time in a calendar year, these SEC juggernauts tangle. But even in Baton Rouge, are the LSU Tigers a threat to the Alabama Crimson Tide? Zach Mettenberger has yet to make LSU fans forget about Jordan Jefferson while the Alabama offense continues to ascend. What was thought to be an SEC West decider may end up simply being a trap for an undefeated Crimson Tide team.

As frustrating as the Tigers have appeared though, they’ve yet to drop a contest. The Auburn scare provoked questions that should be answered this weekend against South Carolina. Emerging with a victory over the Gamecocks and upsetting the Crimson Tide could stabilize a perceived shaky season for Les Miles.

11 of 11

1. South Carolina Gamecocks v. Florida Gators

south carolina
Jeff Blake-US PRESSWIRE

With a decimation of the Georgia Bulldogs, Steve Spurrier’s jaunt to the Swamp becomes the play-in game for SEC East supremacy. Will Muschamp’s crafted the Gators into a blue-collar behemoth on defense and instilled enough confidence in Jeff Driskel to remain undefeated. The winner won’t guarantee an appearance in Atlanta but they’ll occupy the driver’s seat.

And if a team in the East plans on knocking off either a resurgent LSU or a dominant Alabama, it will have to be either Muschamp's Gators or Spurrier's Gamecocks. For Florida, there's a foundation laid that means their second-year head coach's tenure can look toward 2013. The 'Ole Ball Coach isn't getting any younger and his best shot at claiming an SEC championship in Columbia is now.
