Speculate no more about who Nebraska’s new defensive coordinator is going to be, as John Papuchis has been promoted from within. In some other good news if your a Husker fan, his replacement as defensive line coach has also been named.

Rick Kaczenski has been hired, from the same position at the University of Iowa nonetheless, where he has been the past seven seasons. Five of those seasons he was the defensive line coach, under which players such as Adrian Clayborn and Mitch King. All in all, there has been seven draft picks in the past four years from Iowa’s defensive line.

Now the big question for Nebraska will be: What will this defense look like?

With Nebraska in B1G 10, I would venture to say there will be a lot of 4-3 variations. Perhaps the 5-2 will also be employed at times. What Papuchis will do is pick Bo’s brain, and many others, to come up with the best scheme for this team.

The defense may change their blitzing strategy. Carl Pelini always dialed it up on 3rd downs, even if it was third and long. Opposing teams used this strategy against the Huskers at times. I hope that Papuchis does a better job of mixing things up. Keep the offense on their heels, and let the players play.

Pelini has made comments about how this team has been preparing. Outsiders, specifically die hard fans, could and could not tell when this unit prepared the way it should. I would not blame the coaches for this, as the Pelini brothers were at or near the top with scheming.

I do feel that a fresh change in scenery will help this team. As much as I hate to see Carl leave, he deserves an opportunity, and it was just a matter of time. Now the players get to a fresh look, and perhaps will prepare better.
