Gregg Marshall Turns Down Nebraska Cornhuskers Basketball Coaching Offer
No surprise here folks, as Gergg Marshall decides he wants t o stay at Wichita State rather than come to Nebraska. The Cornhuskers had offered Marshall $2 million, but apparently that was not enough. To make matters worse, the list of candidates who want the job is dwindling fast.
Virginia Commonwealth’s Shaka Smart, Gonzaga’s Mark Few, Ohio’s John Groce, UCLA’s Ben Howland, and Colorado’s Ted Boyle have all said they will have little to no interest in the Husker’s opening. Some would rather stay at their current school if not offered a better job than Nebraska’s.
Nebraska had also reached out to Reggie Theus, a former UNLV star, but at this point he also has no interest. Where does Nebraska go from here?
Omaha World Herald sources say the Huskers have talked to Oral Roberts’ Scott Sutton, Colorado State’s Tim Miles, and Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s Rob Jeter. None of these candidates would be a big splash for the Huskers, but they need to find someone who can bring life and energy into this program.
Why not look towards some of the top mid major programs?
Fran Dunphy at Temple, Dave Rose from Brigham Young, Ben Braun at Rice, or Blain Taylor at Old Dominion all have had consistent winners at their current schools and in the past. They may not move the needle nationally like a Shaka Smart, but all of them know how to recruit, how to develop that talent, and how to win. I do not think it is a long shot to say they have done more with less than Doc Sadler did at Nebraska.
Whoever is at the helm for the Huskers will have an awful lot going for them. A new state of the art arena and state of the art practice facility? Check and check. Plus, whoever the coach will be can begin writing a new chapter of Husker basketball tradition, one that certainly can be much better than recent past.
