While early season polls are usually just a best guess of where teams stand prior to the beginning of a season, some turn out to be better than others. In terms of the latest AP Poll released within the past few days, they have the Nebraska Cornhuskers just right.
Number seventeen is a great starting spot for the Cornhuskers. Nebraska comes into the season with so many questions. Will the Huskers be better offensively? How will they fare defensively after losing three really, really great players (though admittedly they played without Jared Crick for most of last season).
The Huskers can easily climb in the standings as the season progresses. They have big games early against both Southern Mississippi an UCLA. Then the Huskers begin the brutal B1G 10 schedule where they get Wisconsin, Michigan, and Penn State at home, but have to travel to Ohio State, Michigan State, and Iowa.
While many in the Cornhusker state would like to them their team higher, they must first answer those questions above. They must also think how the Huskers will transverse this brutal schedule laid before them; can they improve upon last year’s performance?
While Husker teams of the glory days would go 5-1 or 6-0 to start conference play, this team has been far to inconsistent to even think that far ahead. Great wins against the Spartans have been followed by flubs against Northwestern.
If the Huskers can come out and dominate both Southern Miss and UCLA, they could encroach the top ten, and have another top ten showdown when they face Wisconsin in the conference opener for both teams.
