Gronk Wants To Break Madden Curse
In a new video posted online, New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski is campaigning to be on the cover of Madden ’13. The widely popular NFL video game is alleged to have a curse on it as many of the players who have adorned the cover have soon after suffered a decline in performance or injury. Gronkowski wants to break that curse.
In the video, Gronkowski is sitting on a couch with his cast covered leg propped up on a table. After giving a “shout out” to “Gronk-nation” fans, he uses a crutch to do curls. The camera then pans over as Gronk tells his viewers to “check out my brothers” as one does pushups and the other sit ups. The video ends with Gronkowski imploring his fans “get hype’d and get Gronk’d”.
Being selected to grace the cover of Madden is a high honor akin to being on the cover of Wheaties or Sports Illustrated. For Gronkowski, it’s an honor that was certainly earned this past season. The pro bowl tight end had a record breaking season in 2011 recording 90 receptions for 1,327 yards and 17 touchdowns.
While being on the cover of Madden is something to brag about, it also comes with some risk. Much like the Sports Illustrated cover jinx, the “Madden curse” has claimed some of football’s greatest. Some of the victims of the curse include Marshall Faulk, Michael Vick, Ray Lewis, and Shaun Alexander. The latest victim was claimed just last year when Cleveland Browns running back Peyton Hillis was on the cover. After a year in which Hillis recorded 1,177 yards and 11 touchdowns, the running back missed five games with a hamstring injury rushing for just 587 yards and three touchdowns.
Gronkowski appears to be very excited about the opportunity to pose for the cover based on his video but some superstitious Patriots fans may not be. After all, Gronkowski is coming off an injury which required ankle surgery after the Super Bowl. The “Madden curse” may just be superstition fueled by coincidences with a player like Gronk, some may not want to risk it.
