NBA Rumors: Hornets Should Try To Bring In Jose Calderon
With the Raptors’ recent acquisition of point guard Kyle Lowry, who happens to be one of the most underrated players in the NBA and a top ten NBA point guard, Jose Manuel Calderon has reportedly asked for a trade. It is hard to blame him, as he will now be relegated to the second unit if he stays with the Raptors.
Calderon is one of the most efficient point guards in the NBA and an excellent shooter, who is a legitimate NBA starter, but with 1 years and around 10 million left on his contract, the chances of a team trading for him are slim. There is a very good chance that the team will either work on a buyout with the Spanish point guard or just waive him via their amnesty clause. If Calderon hits the open market, the Hornets would be wise to snatch him up.
After trading Jarrett Jack, the Hornets have only one point guard on the roster and it is in third year player, Greivis Vasquez. Vasquez is a good passer and a solid shooter, but he is simply not a starting point guard in the league. He could be one of the best backups in the NBA, but what the team really needs is a pass-first point guard to help run the offense and give all of the Hornets’ talented players great opportunities to score. He would also be an excellent veteran leader and would go to a very young team that really does not have one in their locker room.
With the 5 million dollars of cap room the team just acquired by trading Jack, the team could make a great offer in the amnesty auction, or if he gets bought out and becomes an unrestricted free agent. The Hornets have a guaranteed starting spot open and the money to pay him, which are two major advantages in bringing Calderon to the Hornets. It is still not known what the Raptors will do with Calderon, but if the Hornets have the chance, they should bring him in immediately.
