2012 NFL Draft New Orleans Saints: 5 Defensive Tackles the New Orleans Saints Should Consider
The New Orleans Saints are looking to upgrade some of their defensive positions for next season and they could really use a defensive tackle. Aubrayo Franklin and Shaun Rogers are set to be free agents this offseason so the Saints should use one of their 7 picks and nab a defensive tackle. I think the Saints Should use their 3rd round pick (90th overall) or their 4th round pick (122nd overall) to draft a defensive tackle. Here is a list of some DT’s the Saints should take a look at:
Nick Jean-Baptiste, 6’1″ 335 lbs, Baylor: During his senior year at Baylor, Jean-Baptiste recorded 36 tackles and 8.5 sacks. Jean-Baptiste is a load for opposing offensive linemen as he is able to break through them with his bull rush technique. Jean-Baptiste is such a physical force and is able to get through lines and pick up sacks with his brute strength. In addition to his physicality, Jean-Baptiste is versatile enough that he can be very effective in 4-3 or 3-4 defensive schemes.
Kheeston Randall, 6’5″ 297 lbs, Texas: Randall had somewhat of a lackluster senior season as he recorded 31 tackles and only one sack. Due to his senior season Randall’s stock fell a little and therefore should be available for the Saints at 90 or 122. With that said Randall is a little raw and could benefit from coaching staffs on the next level. However, Randall’s size makes him an intriguing prospect as he is tall and would be able to deflect some passes and possibly make some interceptions. Randall’s tackling could also use some improvement but he is quick and his size alone should help his draft stock.
Logan Harrell, 6’2″ 278 lbs, Fresno State: Harrell had 71 tackles and 6 sacks in his senior season at Fresno State. Harrell is a bit undersized for a DT, but he plays non-stop physical football which is probably why he was able to accumulate so many tackles this past season. Harrell could afford to add some bulk to his frame on the next level and hopefully that would not take away from his great stamina and playing style. The Saints could use a DT who can give them some physical play on the D-Line and rack up lots of tackles and sacks.
Jaye Howard, 6’3″ 292 lbs, Florida: Howard has potential on the next level; he had a decent career at Florida and should be able to get picked up by a team. Furthermore, he should be available for the Saints at 90 or 122. Howard recorded 65 tackles with 5.5 sacks this last season. Howard has good size for a DT in the NFL and should be able to help the Saints if they choose to pick him up. Howard has a nice combination of strength and speed that should serve him well on the next level. Howard would provide depth at the DT position and if he can continue his consistent play in the NFL he would prove to be a good pick up.
Tydreke Powell, 6’2″ 309 lbs, North Carolina: In this past season Powell recorded 46 tackles and a sack as he provided the Tar Heel D-Line with good tackling. Powell has great size for a defensive tackle and provides athleticism at the position. Another area Powell exceeds in is stopping the run, he is able to close up running lanes and make a stop on the ground. Should the Saints draft Powell they will get a good defensive tackle that can give them some more depth on the defensive line.
