New Orleans Saints Sign Punter Thomas Morstead To A Six-Year $21.9 Million Extension
The New Orleans Saints and punter Thomas Morstead just agreed on a six-year, $21.9 million contract extension. Morstead’s new extension means that he will be locked up with the Saints for the next seven seasons.
Last season Morstead was fourth in the league in gross punting average with 48.3 yards and was also second in the league in net punting average with 44.4 yards. Morstead is a very valuable player for the Saints as he is one of the best punters in the league and he also handles the team’s kickoffs.
Morstead’s contract extension gives the Saints great security on special teams because he will be with the team for a very long time. If you recall, Morstead successfully kicked the now famous onside kick that helped the Saints win the Super Bowl back during the 2009-2010 season. What is more impressive is that Morstead was a rookie at the time and later admitted that he could not have been more nervous. Morstead is a clutch punter and the Saints are happy to have him locked up for the next seven seasons.
Morstead’s deal may seem like a lot of money for a punter but according to sources the deal only includes $6.925 million in guaranteed money. Furthermore, this deal makes Morstead the second highest paid punter in the NFL behind only Shane Lechler, the punter for the Oakland Raiders.
The Saints and their fans alike are very excited about Morstead’s deal and he is definitely worth every penny. Morstead’s deal is more great news for the Saints as they continue to put the tumultuous offseason behind them and begin to focus on getting back to the Super Bowl.
