NFL Rumors: Heated Competition For New Orleans Saints Starting Kicker Job
In the latest NFL rumors it appears that there is a fierce competition going on for the starting kicking job for the New Orleans Saints. It is rumored that kicker Garrett Hartley is the starter for the kicking job heading into training camp. However, Hartley’s biggest competition is the veteran kicker John Kasay. Kasay has played in the NFL for 21 seasons and is not expected to just lie down and let Hartley win the starting job. Both players will likely make the roster but the starting spot is up for grabs, even if Hartley is the projected starter at the moment.
Kasay is definitely going to give Hartley a run for his money even though he is 43 years old. Kasay has far more experience than the younger Hartley and that might help him edge Hartley for the starting job. However, it is said that Hartley has a stronger leg than Kasay and his leg coupled with his youth might give him the edge over Kasay.
Now, Hartley is 17 years younger than Kasay and has made 42 or 49 career field goals, good enough for 85.7 percent. In comparison, Kasay has made 461 of 563 field goals for a career percentage of 81.9 percent. It is evident that Hartley will be the kicker of the future and if he wins the starting job the Saints will have a competent kicker. Also, it would be such a luxury for the Saints to have the veteran Kasay backing Hartley up.
This battle will surely heat up during training camp, which opens up today for the Saints. No matter the outcome the Saints will have two good kickers on the roster. The Saints will need them as they will need to kick all of the extra points as a result of Drew Brees’s anticipated touchdowns.
