New Orleans Saints running back Travaris Cadet has made a lot of noise ever since his debut in the Hall of Fame Game. Cadet had eight receptions for 80 yards in his breakout performance and got a lot of people talking about this former unknown. Cadet followed up his HOF game performance with six receptions for 29 yards but he also carried the ball nine times for 26 yards during the Saints defeat to the New England Patriots. Through the first two preseason games Cadet has impressed and looks ready to claim a spot on the Saints’ 53-man roster.
The Saints are pretty loaded at the running back and wide receiver positions but I think Cadet will be able to bump one of the Saints’ running backs. The Saints are pretty set with Darren Sproles, Mark Ingram, and Pierre Thomas as their top three running backs. However, the Saints like to have that fourth running back for depth purposes.
Last season when Ingram was injured Chris Ivory emerged as the Saints third running back after being fourth on the depth chart. Ivory played well for the Saints at the tail end of the season and into the playoffs and along with Sproles and Thomas formed a great running back triumvirate. However, with Cadet now on the scene Ivory might be expendable after it’s all said and done.
Ivory is a good running back but Cadet can do so much more as a football player. In addition to being able to play wide receiver or running back Cadet can also play on special teams for the Saints if needed. Cadet has the ability to return punts and kicks and was a return specialist at Appalachian State. With all of his talents I would not be surprised if he could play on defense too. Cadet is another x-factor type of player much like Sproles. Sproles set a record for all purpose yards last season with 2,696 yards. Cadet could be another Sproles and that makes him more valuable than Ivory.
Ivory is on the roster bubble and if Cadet continues his great play he could very well bump Ivory for a spot on the Saints’ 53-man roster.
