New York Giants 2012 NFL Draft Profile: Ohio State OT Mike Adams
The 2012 NFL Draft is just a few short weeks away, and the suspense is starting to heat up. The New York Giants will begin their off season program on April 16, but the focus for the front office will be how to put together a group of rookies that can help mitigate the loss of several key players.
The Giants have several glaring needs despite winning the Super Bowl. Let’s not kid ourselves, the Giants were a 9-7 team that had a negative point differential.
Couple that with the losses of Mario Manningham, Aaron Ross, Brandon Jacobs and Dave Tollefson and you have a general manager with some work that needs to be done.
Jerry Reese has been a very transparent GM in his time with the Giants. He makes it very clear he wants to build his team up by bolstering the pass rush and trying to get the best skill position players in the passing game, i.e. receivers and defensive backs.
But could this be the year he finally takes an offensive lineman in round one?
If so, Ohio State offensive tackle Mike Adams would be a good fit for the Giants’ right tackle vacancy. Kareem McKenzie is not going to be brought back unless by some miracle he takes the veteran minimum, and even then he shouldn’t be the starter.
Adams would provide the right type of fierceness and attitude to an offensive line that finished dead last rushing the football in 2011.
Since 2004 when Tom Coughlin took over, the Giants had finished no lower than 17th in rushing yards for a season, falling outside the top 10 just twice before 2011.
Needless to say Coughlin will likely push for Reese and his crew to upgrade the hog mollies.
Here are a couple of draft analysts speaking about Adams.
ESPN’s Todd McShay:
Adams has a massive frame and moves easily for his size, and although he doesn’t play with as much of an edge as you’d like, he has the tools to emerge as a starter at the next level.
ESPN’s Mel Kiper:
Adams is a guy who I’ve come around on, because he simply knows how to protect the pocket. He can slide his feet and doesn’t get beat inside, but he has the length and technique to protect the edge.
CBSSports.com:
Adams already moves well enough to get into linebackers on the second level. He has a substantial frame with conspicuous muscle in the right places and the footwork of a dancer, albeit more like hip hop than ballet. On film he did well handling Wisconsin’s J.J. Watt (drafted No. 11 overall by Texas last year).
The consensus on Adams seems to be there is a little worry about his off the field issues and doesn’t seem to be an immediate starter at left tackle like the players ranked ahead of him.
No worries for the Giants in that department as they are in need of a right tackle, which Adams could perform at straight away. Check back tomorrow for another draft profile.
