The New York Giants are getting used to people taking jabs at them.  Last offseason it was New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan saying the Jets were the big brother in New York.  Then, in the week leading up to the Giants-Jets game, certain players on the Jets took shots at Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz.  Now, this offseason former Giants wide receiver Amani Toomer said Tony Romo was better than Eli Manning and now Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is telling Cowboys fans to come out and watch the Cowboys “beat the Giants’ ass.”

I guess winning two Super Bowls in five years doesn’t give you any respect in the NFL.  However, one thing the Giants do is get into a war of words.  Sure, some players might have a quick blurb for the papers but for the most part the Giants don’t fall for the bait.  They do their talking on the field.

More importantly, much to the chagrin of the media, the Giants know the words of a borderline senile owner mean nothing.  They also don’t need to engage in a war of words with the Cowboys, regardless of who is doing the talking.  The Giants have won two Super Bowls in five years.  The Cowboys haven’t won a Super Bowl since 1994 when they beat the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterbacked by Neil O’Donnell and Larry Brown walked away with the MVP.

The closest thing the Giants have had to trash talk comes from former Cowboys tight end Martellus Bennett who said he hated the Cowboys and everyone else in the NFL that doesn’t wear a Giants jersey.  Not exactly trash talk but surely media filler on a slow first day of camp.

Honestly, I can’t blame Jerry Jones for opening his mouth.  He owns a football team and is a businessman and has been successful in both worlds.  The problem with Jones is that he isn’t just an owner.  He is also the general manager as well and that is where he shouldn’t have opened his mouth.  No team Jones has put together has kicked the Giants’ asses, at least not yet.  If he were just an owner his trash talk wouldn’t be a problem, just an owner opening his mouth a la late New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner.

In the meantime, the New York Giants are just going to shrug this off and go on about their business.  They could care less about what an old oil tycoon has to say about the goings-on on a football field.
