NFL Rumors: Is New York Giants’ Jerrel Jernigan on the Chopping Block?
Jerrel Jernigan is entering just his second season with the New York Giants after being taken in the third round of the 2011 NFL draft. But with so much talent on the roster and a lackluster showing from Jernigan thus far in his Giants tenure, the former Troy Trojan could be in danger of losing his spot on the roster.
Jernigan muffed what could prove to be a costly punt in Friday’s preseason opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Jernigan has had issues in the past fielding punts and, though he told the Newark Star-Ledger’s Mike Garafolo he felt more comfortable doing so this year, doesn’t appear to have improved upon those struggles.
With Jernigan’s most useful talent being as a return man, his inability to field punts as well as his lack of success in the return game as a whole could shine a very negative light on the young receiver. His underwhelming performance as a receiver only illuminates his ineffectiveness at this time for the Giants.
The Giants are stacked at receiver and a handful of players are vying for limited roster spots. Jernigan has done little to garner any attention thus far in training camp, while players like Domenik Hixon, Rueben Randle and David Douglas have outplayed him quite considerably.
Meanwhile, guys like David Wilson and Jayron Hosley stood out in the return game. Should their success continue, Jernigan could become a very expendable member of the Giants’ roster.
Jernigan has three more games to prove his worth to the defending Super Bowl champions; otherwise, the speedy receiver could be sent home packing when the regular season gets underway.

This article and premise are totally ridiculous and overblown. Did he have a great game…..no. The news out of camp
Is that he’s looked really good so far, even Eli vouched for him. The giants dont just give up on 3rd round picks after one season either, nor should they. Will JJ ever be a star or even a starter remains to be seen, but this rush to judgement that he’s somehow wore out his welcome is silly and laughable.
Yeah it is much too soon to write him off. I understand what the article is saying especially with the talent they have at receiver. I just don’t see the Giants giving up on a 3rd round draft pick one year into his career. It is possible but i doubt it.
