Former Giants RB Brandon Jacobs Delivers Cold, Hard Truth in Comments About New York Jets
In an occurrence rarer than Halley’s Comet, former New York Giants running back Brandon Jacobs actually made an intelligent statement when asked about the New York Jets in an interview with CBSSports.com.
“They were in the AFC Championship Game twice in a row, but the year after that the Giants win the Super Bowl,” Jacobs told CBSSports.com, via ESPN.com. “That discredits everything as far as the ‘Battle of the City.’ They can’t ever one-up the Giants — not in my eyesight, not in anyone else’s eyesight. They can never do that. They keep trying, but they’re doing it the wrong way.”
The quote is a bit of a low blow to the Jets and what they have been trying to do as the Giants’ “little brother”, but that does not change the fact that Jacobs’ comments ring true. Every time the Jets organization has ever tried to make a move or do something to put them over the Giants, it has backfired or fallen short of succeeding. The Giants have proven time and time again that they are a top-flight organization that knows how to build a successful football team.
The numbers speak for themselves, and though the Jets have done all they can to draw attention to themselves this offseason, the Giants continue to be the more popular team in the New York-New Jersey area. Fans will always flock to success over childish, attention-seeking drama.
Since the Jets won the Super Bowl in 1969, the Giants have been the much more successful franchise with 15 playoff appearances, eight division titles, five NFC Championships and four Super Bowl triumphs—two of which have come in the last five seasons against the Jets’ archrival New England Patriots.
The Jets, meanwhile, have landed in the playoffs 12 times with just three division titles (one during the 1969 season when still a member of the AFL) and not a single visit to the Super Bowl. They have never called home to their own stadium and spent 27 seasons in a stadium named after their in-house rivals.
New York will always be a Giants town no matter how hard the media may try to place all the focus upon Gang Green. Jacobs’ comments may be uncalled for, but sometimes the truth hurts.
