Former New York Giants defensive end Michael Strahan could be in line to be the next great morning talk show host on Live! with Kelly Ripa.
According to a source close to the situation (via Broadcasting & Cable), Strahan will assume the role as replacement for longtime TV talk show legend Regis Philbin. The news is not expected to be announced until early September.
Strahan, 40, has worked as an analyst on Fox NFL Sunday since his retirement from the NFL in 2008. It is expected that Strahan will continue to work in that role despite taking on this new role, according to the Los Angeles Times’ Joe Flint.
He first co-hosted the show with Ripa on October 1st, 2010 and has appeared numerous times since, proving to be a pleasant presence on set. Ripa has been searching for her new co-host since Philbin’s departure, cycling through a rotation of celebrity co-hosts that began on November 21st, 2011.
Strahan retired from the NFL following the Giants’ miraculous victory over the undefeated New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII. The popular defensive lineman tallied two tackles and a sack en route to a 17-14 victory for the Giants—Strahan’s only Super Bowl triumph.
In a 15-year career with the Giants, Strahan recorded 141.5 sacks, including a NFL record 22.5 in 2001, the NFL Defensive Player of the Year award that year and seven Pro Bowl selections. He was inducted into the Giants Ring of Honor in 2010 and continues to be a welcome visitor in the Big Blue locker room on gameday.
