The big story in the NFL over the past 24 hours is the contract situation with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Maurice Jones-Drew. Drew is looking for a contract extension on a contract that has two years and a little over $8 million left on it. In the current market, compared to contracts other players have gotten like Arian Foster and Matt Forte, he seems underpaid. Now it appears he’s open to being traded and the NFL rumors are flying about. Don’t expect the New York Giants to be involved.
It’s not the Giants style to make that kind of trade. Is MJD better than Ahmad Bradshaw? Yes he is and any deal that the two teams would make would probably have to involve him. The Giants already have enough cap issues and especially moving forward with new deals needed for Hakeem Nicks, Victor Cruz and Jason Pierre-Paul.
That kind of trade would eliminate David Wilson’s role as well. MJD is a workhorse back and would get let’s say 85% of the carries. You don’t draft a running back with a first round pick and then don’t play him. Let’s say Wilson is on a level with Ahmad Bradshaw. He also comes at a cheaper cost than a newly signed MJD would. The move just doesn’t make a lot of sense in the long run.
Would it be cool to see Jones-Drew in a Giants backfield? Of Course it would. However, the idea that they can pull it off is more Madden video game than reality. Then again, if the real football world liked Madden, it would be pretty cool.
