It would be the height of comedy if the New York Giants cut Antwaun Molden this offseason, but it wouldn’t at all be surprising. True, they signed the former New England Patriot this offseason and you would think someone who started at corner for another team would not be the sixth or seventh best corner on another team, but that appears to be the case.
Yes, this is the same Molden who started against the Giants with the Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI. Honestly, the move was not all that surprising, considering how ravished the Giants were at corner last season. They lost four corners to season-ending injuries before the season even started.
But after Hakeem Nicks, Victor Cruz and Mario Manningham torched the Patriots’ secondary, you would think the Giants had enough sense to stay away from them.
Obviously that was not the case and maybe the ego factor has to come into play here. General manager Jerry Reese must have thought his coaches could have turned Molden into a worthy backup. It made sense at the time, but after seeing what we’ve seen thus far in mini-camp and training camp, don’t be surprised when the Giants show Molden the door.
Young players like Justin Tryon and Jayron Hosley have been very impressive in camp so far and Tom Coughlin has raved about Michael Coe stepping up and improving. Add starters Corey Webster and Prince Amukamara to the mix and you have a crowded group at cornerback. That’s also not taking into account Terrell Thomas, who could be back by midseason.
The odds are against Molden to make the team. He’d better show the coaches something on special teams if he wants a chance at making it.
