Will Beatty was supposed to be the guy the New York Giants could count on at left tackle. The former second round pick has yet to play in a preseason game this year due to a sciatica injury. The Giants signed Sean Locklear in the offseason as an insurance policy. Do they need to cash that policy in at the start of the season?
It certainly looks that way because Locklear will be starting at left tackle on Friday night against the Chicago Bears. Beatty has been ruled out of starting in the season opener against the Dallas Cowboys on Sept. 5. Locklear has more experience on the right side and current right tackle David Diehl has more experience at the left side. Diehl started at left tackle during the Giants Super Bowl run last season.
Former right tackle Kareem McKenzie remains unsigned and I don’t think that is really an option for the Giants. If the Giants really wanted him back, I think they would’ve brought him back by now. Left tackle is one of the most important positions in the NFL. As long as your quarterback throws right-handed, the left tackle protects the blindside. Stability at the tackle position is important and if the Giants are going to contend for the championship again, they need strong line play.
This is another typical, smart Jerry Reese move, bringing in a veteran backup who has a ton of experience and now he may be starting for them.
