One day removed from being waived by the New York Giants, Mitch Petrus has been re-signed.
The third-year offensive lineman was waived during the Giants’ final cuts when the team was awarded former Philadelphia Eagles lineman D.J. Jones off the waiver wire. Jones failed his physical, however, invalidating the Giants’ claim.
In two seasons with the Giants, Petrus has played in 17 games and started three. The Giants’ 2010 fifth-round pick has been used primarily as a guard after spending his collegiate career at Arkansas playing fullback, tight end and both guard positions.
Petrus was unimpressive in training game and preseason, just a season after failing to prove enough to see the field in more than six games last year. With just two offensive guards on the roster, however, Petrus will have an opportunity to redeem himself in New York.
Kevin Boothe and Chris Snee are the likely starters, but Boothe struggled to hold onto his starting job last season. He started just seven games despite playing in all 16 games for the Giants. If Boothe struggles—or even Snee for that matter, though less likely—Petrus could earn a spot start with a chance to prove he is deserving of his place on the roster.
Or Petrus’ re-signing could be a short-term solution until the Giants find someone they believe to be a more suitable option this season.
For now, Petrus should strive to make the most of his second chance with the defending Super Bowl champions.
