New York Jets Apparently Close the Door on Braylon Edwards with Plaxico Burress Signing
It appears that the New York Jets offense will have a bit of a different look to it in 2011.
Wide receiver Braylon Edwards was a big part of the Jets’ offense the past two seasons, helping develop quarterback Mark Sanchez over his first two pro seasons.
Edwards was a dependable target for Sanchez, especially last season when he one of the most reliable pass catchers in football, dropping just one pass all season.
His catch on the final drive of the Jets’ 17-16 playoff victory against the Indianpolis Colts set up the game-winning field goal as time expired.
But now it appears his days in a Jets uniform or over, as the Jets are apparently unwilling to match his asking price. Instead, they’ve moved on to other receivers, leaving Edwards to find a new team in 2011.
The Jets re-signed Santonio Holmes to a five-year, $50 million deal last week to bring back the dynamic playmaker as their number 1 receiver.
Then on Sunday, the Jets made a bold move when they signed former New York Giants receiver Plaxico Burress to a one-year, $3 million deal.
That gives the Jets two Super Bowl champion receivers, and two receivers who each scored game-winning touchdowns in their respective Super Bowl victories, Super Bowl XLII and XLIII.
The question with Burress is how much does he have left in the tank? He’s been out of football for two years after doing time in prison for having an unlicensed handgun in a New York City club.
Evidently the Jets think he’s going to help out. It’s a risk, sure. But they believe that the risk is worth the potential reward.
I’m a big fan of Braylon Edwards, and I’d love to have seen him return. However, this is the reality of the salary cap era. You can’t keep everyone.
Signing Burress for just $3 million ($3,017,000 to be exact) frees up room for the Jets to re-sign an important piece such as cornerback Antonio Cromartie.
There’s no telling if there’s any salary cap wizardry that could’ve resulted in Holmes, Edwards and Cromartie all re-signing to big deals, but I imagine those odds are slim to none.
Barring something unforeseen, such as Edwards taking a major discount to re-up with the Jets, it looks like he’s going to be an ex-Jet when the season starts. Unfortunately, that’s business.
