The New York Jets’ quest for a 3-0 start to their season came to a thunderous halt in Oakland.
The Raiders (2-1) came to play and they took it to the Jets (2-1), as Gang Green suffered one of their worst losses ever under Rex Ryan, losing 34-24 in their first road game of the season.
Ryan’s normally stout defense allowed 234 rushing yards, the most rushing yards Ryan has given up in his 2+ seasons as head coach.
In fact, the last time Rex Ryan was even associated with a team that allowed that many rushing yards in a game was way back in 1995, when he was the linebackers coach for the Arizona Cardinals.
On that Cardinals team, Rex was on a staff with his twin brother Rob, who was the defensive backs coach, and his father Buddy, who was the head coach and general manager.
In other words, to say this performance was an uncharacteristic effort by Rex Ryan’s defense would be an understatement.
Quite frankly, every single unit for the Jets was throughly outplayed. Offensively, defensively and on special teams, the Raiders were just flat-out better on Sunday.
The aftermath of the Jets’ first loss of the season hasn’t been fully felt yet, either.
Cornerback Antonio Cromartie, who had an excellent game the week prior, had a terrible game in Oakland. He got called for multiple penalties on defense, had a backbreaking fumble on a kickoff return, and left the game with bruised lungs.
He’s not the only one injured, as there was also a report about tight end Jeff Cumberland possibly missing the rest of the season with a leg injury.
Mark Sanchez threw for a career-high 369 yards, but the offense sputtered through a scoreless third quarter and could not catch up late in the fourth.
The aforementioned fumble on the kick return was an enormous play, giving the Raiders 14 points in quick succession, a staggering blow the Jets would not recover from.
Bottom line, there is a lot of things the Jets will need to fix heading into their Week 4 meeting with the Baltimore Ravens. Otherwise, this first half of the season could potentially get really ugly really fast.
If anyone can do it, it’s Rex Ryan. His ability to adjust is what makes him such a great head coach. He will certainly have his hands full with this week’s game tape, that’s for sure.
