New York Jets Laugh Off Comments by Miami Dolphins’ Marshall: “All Talk,” Says Cromartie
It’s not very often that a New York Jets opponent is doing the loudest talking in the days leading up to a game.
The Monday night matchup between the Jets (2-3) and Miami Dolphins (0-4) is not exactly must-see TV from anyone’s perspective, even if it is a divisional rivalry game from two teams with long histories of Monday night classics.
Dolphins wide receiver Brandon Marshall tried to generate some buzz for the game when he popped off earlier in the week about wanting to fight a few Jets players and get thrown out of the game.
With reporters laughing at his locker, the eccentric Marshall said that he was serious, and that he really believes he won’t make it to half time without getting thrown out of the game, in a bizarre attempt to pump his team, I suppose.
If that’s what he wants to do, well, Jets head coach Rex Ryan has no problem with that.
“If he wants to get kicked out of the game in the second quarter,” Ryan said, “I think he should.”
“I’m just happy that he’s not picking on me to fight him,” he said of the 6’4, 230 lb Marshall. “We’ve had that issue before and, quite honestly, I was a little nervous running across that field. I feel good. At least he never called me out.”
Cornerback Antonio Cromartie, one of the players who Marshall did say he’ll try to “fight with” during the game, dismissed Marshall’s comments as nothing more than hot air, calling him a “front-runner” who wouldn’t back up his words.
“I mean, he had to give [the media] something to write about,” Cromartie said. “You all don’t have anything else to write about. I really don’t even care. This is my 11th time facing Brandon, so we’ve got a lot of history together. For a guy to come out and fight, they better be trying to win game one rather than coming out to try to fight.”
Miami is winless on the season, coming off their bye with their starting quarterback out for the season and seemingly no direction of where they want to go.
“It’s all talk,” Cromartie continued. “I mean, he’s got to give [the media] something to write about because there’s no talk going on [in Miami] because they’re 0-4.”
Bart Scott, the hard-hitting linebacker that Marshall also took a shot at, was not reached for comment yet, but defensive coordinator Mike Pettine offered his take on the situation.
“I shook my head when I saw that one,” a grinning Pettine remarked. “As long as it’s not a 1-for-1 trade, he can go right ahead.”
The Jets certainly hope that none of their players can tangled up in Marshall’s bizarre antics, that’s for sure. Miami would be hard-pressed to get their first win of the season without their best offensive player.
I think the Jets are doing the right thing by essentially calling Marshall’s bluff. He won’t really get thrown out of the game in the first half, right? If he does, that’s fine with New York.
So long as he doesn’t take any Jets out with him, of course.
