A couple of New York Jets players are headed for offseason surgery after playing through pain in the final weeks of the 2011 regular season.

Eric Smith, the Jets’ special teams captain and starting strong safety, already had surgery on a torn meniscus in his knee, an injury he played through for over a month.

Mark Sanchez, although beaten up over the course of the year, is not expected to have offseason surgery this year. He had surgery on his knee following his rookie season.

Starting left guard Matt Slauson needed a surgical operation on his left shoulder, an injury he sustained back in 2010 but did not bother him that much until the last few weeks of this season.

Defensive lineman Marcus Dixon is also expected to have surgery on his shoulder, as is fellow defensive lineman Mike DeVito.

DeVito, a starter on the line and one of the more unsung heroes of the Jets defense, battled through two knee injuries over the course of the year. Dixon did an admirable job filling in for him.

For now, those players are the only Jets scheduled for offseason surgery. Considering how under the radar these injuries were during the season, it’s possible that news of others will come out later.
