2012 NFL Free Agency: The New York Jets Add an Intriguing Option in Speedy WR Chaz Schilens
The New York Jets added an interesting player to their offense this week when they signed former Oakland Raiders wide receiver Chaz Schilens to a one-year deal worth a reported $765,000.
It is a low-risk, potentially high-reward move for the Jets, who will likely let the 26-year-old Schilens compete for the starting wide receiver job opposite Santonio Holmes previously held by Plaxico Burress.
At 6’4, 225 lbs, Schilens may give the Jets the size and speed they need at the WR 2 spot, something they’ve lacked since the departure of Braylon Edwards following the 2010 season.
At the NFL Combine back in 2008, Schilens ran a 4.33 40-yard dash, and recorded a 43 inch vertical leap as well.
The former San Diego State Aztec was a seventh-round pick that season by the Raiders, and he’s shown flashes of his raw physical ability both as a receiver and as a blocker in the running game.
However, he has been unable to stay healthy thus far in his NFL career, having caught just 72 passes for 902 yards and seven touchdowns in his four seasons in Oakland.
“I just always liked playing the Jets,” Schilens said. “It always seemed to be a big-time game. I always liked the type of players they have on their team. And I like Rex Ryan’s mentality.”
Schilens reunites with his former position coach in Oakland, Sanjay Lal, who will be coaching the wide receivers in New York this season.
As of today, the Jets’ current depth at receiver includes Holmes as the unquestioned number 1 option, along with second-year man Jeremy Kerley in the slot, where he showed a lot of promise in 2011.
Schilens will compete with Patrick Turner among others for the starting job, but it’s reasonable to expect the Jets to draft another receiver or two in April, which is said to be a deep draft for wideouts.
If Chaz Schilens can stay healthy, he’s got the physical tools needed to be a productive player. On a one-year deal, it will be in his best interest to prove it.
It’s a great deal for the Jets to get a young, tall, speedy receiver with something to prove. It’s a shrewd signing with no real downside and the potential to be a steal.
