The New York Jets Will Have Ten Selections in the 2012 NFL Draft, Including Seven on Day Three
The NFL officially announced their compensatory selections in the 2012 NFL Draft, and the New York Jets, Cleveland Browns, Green Bay Packers led all teams with four compensatory picks each.
The Jets were awarded two compensatory selections each in the 6th and 7th round, which the NFL gave them for their free agent losses of Braylon Edwards, Shaun Ellis, Drew Coleman and Brad Smith.
Edwards, Ellis, Coleman and Smith signed with the San Francisco 49ers, New England Patriots, Jacksonville Jaguars and Buffalo Bills, respectively, last offseason.
The Jets currently have the 16th overall pick of the draft in round 1, and they also have the 15th pick of round 2 (47th overall) and the 14th pick of round 3 (77th overall).
They don’t have a 4th-round draft pick because they traded it to the Denver Broncos when they acquired Tim Tebow last week, which I’ve dissected extensively at this point.
The Jets also have their own 5th-round selection, the 154th overall pick. That is their first of seven draft picks in the final three rounds of the draft.
The four compensatory picks cannot be traded. Those selections are picks number 202 and 203 in round 6 and 242 and 244 in round 7.
Additionally, the Jets acquired a 7th-round pick in a preseason trade that sent safety Dwight Lowery to the Jaguars, but that pick was traded last week to the Indianapolis Colts.
In that trade, the Jets send that pick they acquired from the Jaguars along with backup quarterback Drew Stanton to the Colts in exchange for a 6th-round pick the Colts had originally acquired from the Philadelphia Eagles.
The Jets also have a 7th-rounder they acquired from Denver in the Tebow trade. That selection is pick number 232 overall. They traded their own 7th-round pick in a deal for offensive lineman Caleb Schlauderaff.
Got all that?
To recap, the Jets’ ten selections in the 2012 NFL Draft are as follows, (as of March 27, 2012):
Round 1: 16th overall
Round 2: 47th overall
Round 3: 77th overall
Round 4: (no selections)
Round 5: 154th overall
Round 6: 187th overall (from Colts via Eagles), 202nd overall (compensatory), 203rd overall (compensatory)
Round 7: 232nd overall (from Broncos), 242nd overall (compensatory), 244th overall (compensatory)
With all of these selections, hopefully the Jets will be able to address their needs in time for the start of the regular season.
The 2012 NFL Draft will take place at Radio City Music Hall in New York City on April 26, 27 and 28.
