This is the most lucid argument I’ve seen yet on the Jets’ overall position. The Jets weak draft history since 2007 has left them with too many holes and the aggressive trade-up strategy hasn’t worked. As a result, this draft could be make or break for Tannenbaum.
Although I’m mostly in agreement a few points:
1) Taking Tebow to run the wildcat and be backup may well be worth a 4th. Its at least debatable.
2) The Jets were limited in what they could do in free agency and Tannenbaum really can’t be blamed for not doing more. They bid for the best safeties available and ended up with the most talented one – we’ll see if he can stay healthy. They had inside information on a WR with potential and signed him. The free agent supply of tackles and safeties was especially weak this year and the Jets had limited cap space.
3) The title of the article “will Tannenbaum do the right thing” and presumably trade down instead of up is the question. We will find out. If Ingram is not there at 16, I think the Jets will trade down. Ingram is really the only guy at this value that fits the Jets. He’s not a perfect pass rusher, but he’s definitely an upgrade in this area, and he’s versatile enough to play in all the different schemes and can help in back and tight end coverage. Upshaw can’t, and he is really sliding down draft boards lately. Here’s the thing: Ingram will probably be gone. They should trade down, get an OLB, a WR and a RT in the first 2 days.
