One of the biggest needs for the New York Jets heading into the 2012 NFL Draft is wide receiver.  Justin Blackmon of Oklahoma State won’t get out of the first six picks so you can cross him off of your wish list.  Unless Notre Dame wide receiver Michael Floyd takes an unlikely tumble on draft day there isn’t much talent at the wide receiver position worthy of the number 16 pick.  However, there is plenty of talent that could be available to the Jets in the second round.

Wisconsin wide receiver Nick Toon is a nice fit for the Jets as a second or third round selection.  If the last name sounds familiar it is because he is the son of former Jets Pro Bowl wide receiver Al Toon.  Toon isn’t the best wide receiver in the draft and will need to do some work on his game when he enters the NFL.  However, Toon has decent size at 6-2 and 215 pounds and has some speed but will not burn past anyone.  Toon is an excellent route runner and gets excellent positioning by using his body to shield defenders from the ball.  He is more of a possession-type receiver but if the Jets are serious about getting back into a ground and pound style he could fit right into new offensive coordinator Tony Sparano’s scheme.  He is not afraid to go over the middle and make the tough catch.  Toon can take a hit and maintain his balance and is excellent along the sidelines, using his footwork to keep himself inbounds while making the tough catch.  He had a nose for the end zone last season as he found it 10 times in 13 games.  He also hauled in 64 passes for 926 so the production is there.  He will also go downfield and make blocks which will be vital if the Jets return to the running game.

Toon is not a burner.  He sometimes is inconsistent with his catches and will drop routine passes.  He also has dealt with some foot and leg issues over the last couple of years ranging from turf toe, thigh injuries, and a left foot injury which prevented him from participating in all but the 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine.

Overall, Toon represents good value for the Jets on the second day and would be able to step in as a number two or three receiver with Santonio Holmes and Jeremy Kerley to form a reliable receiving corps for quarterback Mark Sanchez.
