New York Jets Draft Georgia Tech WR Stephen Hill with 43rd Pick in NFL Draft
The New York Jets traded up with the Seattle Seahawks from the 47th pick to the 43rd overall spot in the second round and addressed one of their biggest needs by drafting Georgia Tech wide receiver Stephen Hill. To move up, the Jets exchanged second round picks and gave Seattle a fifth round draft choice and a seventh rounder.
Stephen Hill is a flat out burner. Last season with Georgia Tech he averaged 29.3 yards per catch, leading the nation. The Jets desperately needed a receiver to compliment Santonio Holmes and they got one in Hill. Hill is a bit of a project, coming from a college that utilized a triple option offense and rarely threw the ball. However, Hill should be able to immediately step in and at least make defenses recognize his ability to stretch the field.
Hill will need some coaching but he possesses spectacular physical skills at 6-4, 215 pounds to go along with his 4.36 40 speed. Last season, Hill caught 28 passes for 820 yards and five touchdowns. Hill is exactly what the Jets need.
Hill will make the tough catch but will need work to be a success at the next level but he will need to learn to consistently catch the ball away from his body and look the ball into his hands before trying to turn up field and make a play. Coming from an offense that was run-heavy, Hill is an adept blocker and will get in the way of defensive backs trying to meet the run but will need to be more physical.
Overall, this is exactly what the Jets needed and if Hill can improve his game he has the physical gifts to be an absolute superstar at the next level. His height and speed make him a threat in the red zone and defensive backs will struggle to compete against him. It is a bit of a stretch to compare him to another Georgia Tech wide receiver, Calvin Johnson, but I really see him having that kind of ability if he develops his game to where it can be. He just needs to put it all together and when he does Mark Sanchez or Tim Tebow will have a beast to throw to.
