First Olympic Game is Special For Knicks’ Anthony and Chandler
With so many superstars on one team, it will be difficult to see players such as the New York Knicks‘ Tyson Chandler and Carmelo Anthony shine in a game-by-game basis.
This is Team USA at the Olympics, not an NBA roster where the top players average more than 35 minutes per game. Chandler started and played only 11 minutes while Anthony saw 17 minutes.
Chandler made his Olympics debut with eight points and nine rebounds. He made three of five shots from the field, but struggled with free throws, only making two of his five attempts.
For Anthony, this game meant more to him and Lebron James as they joined David Robinson to become the only American-born basketball players to participate in three different Olympiads. Kobe Bryant has been around longer, but declined to play in 2000 due to an offseason marriage and in 2004 due to his legal case.
Team USA head coach Mike Krzyzewski decided to make Chris Paul, Bryant, James, Kevin Durant and Chandler his starting five, so Anthony had to come off of the bench. Anthony had nine points and nine rebounds, but struggled, making only three of his ten shots.
Anthony wasn’t needed to be at his best in this game though since Durant led the team with 22 points and James had eight assists in Team USA’s 98-71 victory over Team France. They led in rebounds 49-33, assists 27-10, steals 10-4 and also outshot Team France from the field. Team USA made 43.1-percent of their shots from the field, including eight of 25 from three-point range at 32-percent. Team France made just 39.4-percent of their shots from the field and struggled from three-point range, making only two of 22 shots at 9.1-percent.
Team USA will play again on Tuesday July 31 against Tunisia at 5:15 p.m. ET on NBC.
