Sandy Alderson and the New York Mets made a very shrewd move when they picked up Chris Capuano on a one year deal heading into the 2011 season. Some of Chris Capuano’s numbers make your eyes hurt – most notably his 4.55 ERA – but his performance was a little better than someone might think. His 4.04 FIP indicates that his skills were better than the surface results. Even though Chris Capuano provided the New York Mets with some solid innings, he is unlikely to come back to Queens according to Jon Heyman. Understandably, he wants a multi-year deal. At 33, I’m sure he would love a three year pact, but he might have to settle for two. The New York Mets on the other hand would prefer to just work on a one year deal for the Chris Capuano types. On one hand, I am a tiny bit disappointed about this, but on the other hand I really don’t think there will be that much of a drop off from his replacement. Furthermore, a lot of Chris Capuano’s value came at Citi Field where the huge dimensions complemented his fly ball tendencies. Go ahead and check out his home/road splits – particularly the spike in HR rate away from home. With the walls being moved in at Citi Field, its reasonable to expect that his 2012 numbers would take a step back. Like they say, all good things must come to an end. Let’s just hope the New York Mets’ front office can identify next year’s version of Chris Capuano.
