Before the New York Mets hired Terry Collins as their manager, a large portion of the Mets fan base vocalized their desire for Wally Backman to get the job. Most Mets fans love Backman because he reminds them of the tough, gritty Mets teams of the 80′s. It’s understandable why Mets fans long for those days, considering the team has been in turmoil since the 2007 season.
For his part, Collins did an admirable job for the Mets in 2011 and will continue to coach the team in 2012. Backman, who was the Mets AA (Binghampton) manager in 2011, learned today of his promotion to the AAA Buffalo affiliate. Backman is well liked within the Mets organization and some think he’s being groomed to eventually be the next Mets Major League Manager. This will be Backman’s 10th managerial season.
Last season, Backman led the Binghamton Mets to a 65-76 record. In 2010, he led the Single-A Brooklyn Cyclones to a 51-24 record and took his team to the New York-Penn league finals. Congratulations to Wally, we wish him the best of luck!
