Maybe the New York Mets aren’t actively shopping utility-man Daniel Murphy, but he is “available” apparently. I use the term “utility-man” loosely because he’s not really a guy whose skill set screams defensive versatility. The New York Mets have simply moved him around to different positions out of necessity and/or out of a desire to get his bat in the lineup. When Daniel Murphy can stay healthy, he can do some damage with the stick – evidenced by the .912 OPS he posted in July.
There are a few reasons why the Mets should hold on to Murphy for this upcoming season. First of all, he’s inexpensive. Still in his pre-arbitration years, Murphy’s cost will be near league minimum. The Mets can’t have enough of those type of players over the next couple of years. Secondly, he offers the ability to fill in at a couple of different positions. If the Mets trade David Wright (as they should) they’ll have a third baseman to turn to in Muphy. He can also take over at second base if that is where a vacancy arises. Finally, because of his flaws, Murphy is probably going to be more valuable to the Mets than the return that they would get. While Murphy is a nice player, who is going to trade an impact prospect for a guy who has had trouble staying healthy and lacks power?
Most of the trade nuggets that we come across are going to amount to nothing. It’s just the nature of the Hot Stove season. Lots of barking, but only a little biting over the course of the winter. For the New York Mets, I imagine that this Daniel Murphy business is just a little barking.
