The New York Mets saw their first target bite the dust early this week when Joe Nathan signed a deal with the Texas Rangers. This is assuming that the New York Mets were interested in the former Minnesota Twin in the first place. Joe Nathan will get to close for the Texas Rangers as Neftali Feliz will move into the rotation for good. The deal is worth at least $14.75 million over two years. There is a $9 million team option ($750K buyout) for a third year. I liked Joe Nathan as a potential signing for the New York Mets, but I’m not sure they need spend quite that much money on a closer. I might be underestimating the closer market, but I don’t mind seeing the New York Mets be patient here. Jonathan Broxton remains my favorite bullpen target at this point, but apparently competition is stiff. Not to mention, Sandy Alderson has yet to reach out to Jonathan Broxton’s camp. It is still early in the offseason so there is no need for the New York Mets to rush into anything.
