New York Mets Cautiously Optimistic About Johan Santana’s Return

Brad Barr-US PRESSWIRE

As we all know, the New York Mets were dealt a tremendous blow last year when ace Johan Santana had to undergo surgery to repair a torn capsule in his left shoulder.  This type of injury has not treated pitchers well – Mark Prior and Jake Peavy are two of the better known names in recent history to suffer through a similar injury.  With all of that said, even an 80-85% shell of vintage Johan Santana will be one of the better pitchers in the New York Mets’ rotation – if not the best.  At this moment, Johan Santana is continuing to work out and according to Sandy Alderson is in a “normal progression” toward Spring Training.  While I don’t expect his return to go as smooth as butter, I am excited about him reaching 100% health and making his return to the mound for the New York Mets.  I don’t expect anything close to his Cy Young days, but I still think there is plenty that he can offer to the club if he’s able to take the ball every fifth day though the last two seasons on his contact.
