New York Mets Avoid Arbitration With Mike Pelfrey
Right-handed starting pitcher Mike Pelfrey is one of several New York Mets players eligible for arbitration in 2012. Instead of taking a case to the arbitrator though, Mike Pelfrey and the New York Mets agreed on a one-year deal worth $5.675 million. I’ve made no attempt to hide my dislike for 6’7″ Witchita State product. I’d love it if Sandy Alderson could find a trade partner at some point in 2012 and turn Mike Pelfrey into something tangible – a back-of-the-rotation prospect, hell I’d even be okay with a decent relief pitching prospect. I just think it is ridiculous for the New York Mets to have to pay $5+ million for a starting pitcher that is just not very good. It feels kind of silly to complain about $5.675 million, but it is a pretty hefty price to pay when you aren’t getting halfway decent production. Unfortunately, there are not many other starting pitching options in Queens so we are stuck watching Mike Pelfrey for a little while longer.

In a market where Chris Capuano gets two years and $10 million, plus a third year option, plus performance incentives, Pelf at $5.675 makes econdomic sense.
All deals are risky, this is comparatively less so.
I don’t have a problem with performance incentives in a deal, but maybe the Dodgers were just insane to make that commitment to Capuano. There are certainly other deals that have been made for pitchers comparable to Capuano and Pelfrey for less money and/or fewer years.
