New York Mets Should Trade Mike Pelfrey ASAP
Second semester of grad school is winding to a close which means the work doesn’t stop. In the past I’d be too happy to blow off studying in favor of combing through every nugget of baseball news that developed, but unfortunately I’m a better student these days. With that said, when I saw that the New York Mets were looking to deal starting pitcher Mike Pelfrey, I couldn’t hold my tongue (fingers) any longer. It’s been a while since I’ve discussed Mike Pelfrey, but my feelings have not changed and I will be more than happy to see him out of a New York Mets jersey.
I don’t need to go over any stats. They’re just too depressing – especially considering that he was the team’s No. 1 prospect heading into the 2007 season. What kind of bullsh!t is that? What a joke. Anyway, at this point the best reason to dump Pelfrey is to get rid of his contract. He’s owed $5.6 million this season and faces his third year of arbitration in 2013. At this rate, it is not likely that he’s tendered a contract for 2013, but I’m still tired of watching the guy pitch in Queens. The only reason to keep him around for now is to make sure there are enough veterans to soak up innings before dipping into the minor leagues. I’m expecting Matt Harvey and Jenrry Mejia to get some action in 2012 and perhaps even Jeurys Familia. The Mets don’t want to rush them though. Having enough starting pitching depth allows them to hold the youngsters back until they’re ready. That’s the only value that Pelfrey has to the team in my eyes.
Maybe if we’re lucky, Mike Pelfrey will get off to a serviceable start and build up his value to something bordering on respectable. After a couple of months maybe some team realizes that it needs some starting pitching depth (you can never have too much pitching) and swings a deal for the Shocker (Pelfrey attended Wichita State.) Either way, the New York Mets should definitely be aggressive in their attempts to dump Mike Pelfrey into some other team’s lap.

Don’t be stupid. The team has not one to replace him in the rotation. You either rush young arms or use someone who’s even worse.
ASAP doesn’t necessarily mean “today” or “next week”, but as soon as the Mets feel as though their pitching depth is enough to keep the kids in the minors until they’re ready, pull the trigger. If it’s just a matter of finding innings, they can sign any old bum to handle that. The sooner they can get rid of Pelfrey though, the less money they’ll have to pay him.
This has been my war cry for 3 years.
As he approaches the mound you wonder how many homeruns Pelfrey will give up in the first inning.
And then you play a game with yourself: how many innings he’ll stay in and what score we’ll be losing by when he’s pulled.
As to having 5 starters – I’m with Bob Feller – pitchers should pitch more often.
Maybe I haven’t been following prospects long enough (it’s probably been about 4.5 years that I’ve really followed them closely) but I’m still just blown away by how much an organization’s top prospect can suck so much. That sounds like a solid drinking game – something that Pelfrey makes you want to do more often than not.
I agree with you Craig. Time for Mike to pitch somewhere else. Even if he does well. To many ups and downs. Should be 10 games over .500 by now. Also if he does do well for us, he is a Boras client and will walk as Boras will inflate his worth.
Good point. I didn’t bother to mention Scott Boras, but he’ll find a way to get even Pelfrey 1.5-2x the money that he deserves. Way more than the Mets should ever think about paying him.
