New York Mets Need Consistent Leadership
Leadership in all walks of life comes from those at the top. If the head of any company does not demand production, that company usually fails. The same could be said for professional sports, and there are many less than exemplary examples such as the New York Mets. Anybody can say what they will about the late George Steinbrenner, but the man demanded the best even though he interfered what many will argue as too much. The one thing Steinbrenner learned to do eventually is allow the baseball executives he put in place to do their jobs.
With Steinbrenners’ absence for those couple years in the early 90′s, Gene “Stick” Michael and Buck Showalter were able to build a dynasty for the New York Yankees, although they were not around to enjoy the fruits of their labor. Steinbrenner in all his ramblings and interference, finally learned to say what he wanted, but not to interfere with how Brian Cashman and Joe Torre won from year to year with the team that was built by Stick and Buck.
Fast forward to 2012 and the Mets are in the midst of another mid-season collapse and are in the undesirable position of having the polar opposite of George Steinbrenner as their owners. Fred and Jeff Wilpon do not interfere enough. They sit back and believe that a major league club will just flash before their eyes and mold themselves into a winning team. Mets fans need ownership now more than ever and somehow we all see that the cry is falling upon deaf ears.
We all know that the Wilpons are not shy about spending money as they have done this in the past. But when is there going to be a time when the New York Mets ownership put the right executives in their place and then spend the money? Is Sandy Alderson and his crew of top quality front office men just a smokescreen, or are the Wilpons seriously going to try and build a winning franchise?
To the fans, it seems as though the Wilpons are merely playing out their childhood fantasy of owning a MLB team. To the rest of the league, it must be a relief that there is a big market club acting as if they are Kansas City Royals or Tampa Bay Rays. Where does it end? These players that have been busting their tail all year need ownership to back them up as they deserve the help to get to the next level. I’ll say it again as I’ve said it before- The Mets are so close to building a winning club, the Wilpons should taste it.
Unfortunately, no fan will ever believe in their team fully again until ownership has changed hands. The Wilpons undoubtedly will never sell the team that they have loved for so long, but that love will only carry the loyalty of the fans for so long. CitiField is half empty, and that is on a good night. Flushing has become the epitome of pathetic baseball as the cross-town Bronx Bombers are winning at an incredible rate. The Mets need some kind of consistent leadership before the fans that are left refuse to watch this team of minor leaguers regress because there is no help from the top.
