Johan Santana Tosses Three Scoreless Innings for Brooklyn Cyclones
Johan Santana hurled three scoreless innings in his rehab start for the Brooklyn Cyclones this afternoon.
The Brooklyn Cyclones beat the Auburn Doubledays 8-0 but all eyes were on Johan Santana who threw for the first time since being put on the 15-day DL on July 20th.
“I feel good”, said Santana. “My body had a chance to recover. I really needed that. I threw all my pitches and commanded my fastball.” After throwing three scoreless innings in which he allowed one hit and one walk, Santana three three simulated innings in the Cyclones bullpen totaling his pitch count to 90 pitches.
Santana is rehabbing his fatigued shoulder and hopes to contribute for the team down the stretch, but will throw another side session on Tuesday.
“We’ll see how everything goes on Tuesday, we’ll be able to get together with the team, with [Pitching Coach] Dan [Warthen] and [Manager] Terry [Collins] and see exactly what the whole plan is going to be for me, the good thing is that I was able to do my job and I feel good.”
It’s been nine weeks since Santana threw the first no-hitter in franchise history. Manager Terry Collins was criticized for letting Santana throw 134 pitches on that historic night, aware of the repercussions, Collins stood with his “hero” and Santana finished the job.
“What happened to me had nothing to do with the no-hitter.” said Santana “I know Terry was going to be criticized, It’s just how you feel and what you do on the field.”
Whether or not the no-hitter effected Santana it is clear that the ace feels good and is ready to give the team a boost and will pitch this weekend against the Atlanta Braves at Citi Field.
“I can’t wait to get back, to see my teammates and be part of the team, and help out as much as I can because that’s what I’m here for.”
