After signing a one year deal with the New York Mets, Chris Young is easily the worst Mets pitcher since Oliver Perez.
Time and time again, Young has not only shown the promise that nominated him a Cy Young candidate back in 2006 and 2007, but has also shown his true identity as a five-inning pitcher who couldn’t even complete a Little League game at their world series in Williamsport.
While his stats will show a solid pitcher, Young’s inability to impress goes beyond the numbers. Granted, the man is the number four pitcher in the rotation, so calling Young solid is an overstatement by any stretch of the imagination.
Chris Young Stats
3-7/ 4.33 ERA/ 14 GS/ 81.0 IP/ 55 SO
His era would indicate the solidarity as stated earlier, but Young’s win/loss statistics would’ve increased heavily had Young not succumb to his true form as a six-inning pitcher.
Young doesn’t win games–he finds ways to lose them. Such examples include Monday night against the Colorado Rockies in which Young was perfect through five innings before giving up an infield hit, bloop single, and a ball thrown away on a sacrifice bunt. The result: another loss. Or how about July 4 against the Philadelphia Phillies, when Young was controlling a shut out into the seventh inning before giving up back to back home runs to Chase Utley and then Carlos Ruiz–another loss for Young. One more example to solidify Young’s spot in the New York Bust hall of shame: June 23 against the crosstown rivals, the New York Yankees. The Mets staked Young to a 3-0 lead heading into the seventh, when Young walked the leadoff man, gave up a double and served up a bomb to Raul Ibanez, who tied the game at 3. The Mets would go on to lose the game 4-3 and ignite the bad spell that has plagued Young.
The three losses stated above warrant enough reason to call Young a bust, but in the words of Bob Barker, wait, there’s more.
With a fastball that tops off at 84 mph, and change up not that much different, hitters recognize the batting practice fastball around the fifth and sixth inning (normally the second time through the lineup).
Here’s the kicker, in his second season with the Mets and first full season, Young is winless at Citi Field. That’s right, Young is winless at home. Young is 0-4 with a 4.46 ERA in six games at Citi Field.
As my evidence shows, Young has earned a slot in the New York Bust Hall of Shame.
The defense rests.
