Ryan Callahan is Named the 26th Captain in New York Rangers History

Today New York Rangers General Manager Glen Sather informed the public that forward Ryan Callahan would be the captain for the upcoming season making him the 26th in Blueshirts history. Also, Brad Richards and Marc Staal would be the two alternate captains.

Callahan has been an alternate captain for the Rangers since October 2, 2009 and was the favorite to be named captain this offseason when he signed a three-year deal to stay in New York. The Rochester, NY native is a gritty two-way forward who has recorded 200-plus hits each of his last three years and tallied 20-plus goals in two of the last three years.

Last year, Callahan was named team MVP by his teammates and also received the John Halligan Good Guy Award. Callahan also, set a career high last year with 23-goals.

Cally is the first Rangers captain since Brian Leetch to be a homegrown product, when he was captain from 1997-2000. After than Mark Messier, Jaromir Jagr, and Chris Drury have all wore the C.
