According to Joel Sherman, the New York Yankees’ Eric Chavez is leaning heavily toward retirement. Eric Chavez provided the New York Yankees with some solid all-around production off of the bench and was particularly valuable during Alex Rodriguez’ absence. In 175 plate appearances, Eric Chavez posted a .263/.320/.356 line with two home runs. Those aren’t numbers that blow you away, but when you can go to your bench and get something its a big plus – especially when you know the defense is going to be rock solid as well. I’m not sure anyone really expected the New York Yankees to bring Eric Chavez back for 2012. The emergence of Eduardo Nunez will probably allow the New York Yankees to mostly avoid the backup infielder market this off-season. If Eric Chavez does in fact hang up the cleats, his career will unfortunately be remembered as one derailed by injury. Whatever happens, I wish the best for Eric Chavez…unless he becomes a Boston Red Sock of course.
