The New York Yankees and their fans are certainly aware of the big second half that Ivan Nova had as he emerged as the number two starter behind CC Sabathia.  Ivan Nova’s final numbers: 16-4, 3.70 ERA – while perhaps not convincing many subscribers of “new age” stats – provided a very solid rookie resume.  I must admit, I had a little more hope than I should have that Ivan Nova would take home Rookie of the Year honors.  I can’t say that I’m terribly disappointed at this point though.  This year’s field was pretty strong with the Tampa Bay Rays’ Jeremy Hellickson taking home the hardware in the American League.  The Los Angeles Angels’ Mark Trumbo finished second despite a .291 on-base percentage (he did have 29 homers which will earn a few votes).  The Kansas City Royals’ Eric Hosmer is more talented than Trumbo, but he had to settle for third.  I’m not sure he’s too worried.  He’ll be vying for MVP votes before too long.  On that same sort of note, Ivan Nova has bigger fish to fry than a Rookie of the Year trophy.  It would have been nice, but the New York Yankees will be relying on him to help bring home World Series banners.  Nobody remembers rookies of the year without looking it up, but everyone remembers champions.

Just in case you are wondering/don’t already know, the Atlanta Braves’ Craig Kimbrel took home National League Rookie of the Year honors.  Not sure that is much of a consolation for essentially closing the casket on the Braves’ season in the finale, but whatever.
