With a breakout season in 2011, the New York Yankees’ Curtis Granderson received a lot of well-deserved attention as an MVP candidate. Well, the votes came in and he finished fourth. Guess who gets to go down as the Most Valuable Player in the American League for 2011? Justin Verlander. The Detroit Tigers’ ace gets to take home the Cy Young and the MVP. This is where I’d go on about a 50-60 word rant about how its kind of BS that a pitcher can win the “MVP” for his position and win the MVP as well. It’s not like Jacoby Ellsbury, Jose Bautista or Robinson Cano (2nd, 3rd and 6th) can win the Cy Young Award, right? Anyway, Justin Verlander winning the MVP is okay with me in this case because he’s a keeper on my fantasy team. It’s a double standard, but its also just an end-of-year award. It’s not going to change the fact that the New York Yankees were eliminated in the ALDS. Congrats to Justin Verlander and congrats to Curtis Granderson and Robinson Cano who had strong seasons of their own.
