It was only a few days ago when I discussed the New York Yankees’ interest in Cuban outfielder Jorge Soler and why they should aggressively pursue him. I haven’t changed my stance over the past ~72 hours so all of that still stands. Are the New York Yankees in the lead to sign Jorge Soler though? That’s what Kevin Goldstein thinks (twitter). When asked who he thought Jorge Soler would sign with, his top three teams (in order) were the New York Yankees, Texas Rangers and Philadelphia Phillies. That is some legit competition both in terms of financial capabilities (even though there is the idea that Philadelphia Phillies are pushing against their financial ceiling) and recent success. Of course neither one stands up to the New York Yankees brand. I don’t mean that in an arrogant way either. People all over the globe know who the New York Yankees are and you would be awfully subjective (at best) if you thought otherwise. At this point a prediction of where someone will sign – even from someone who has earned “expert” status – doesn’t hold a TON of weight. It’s nice to see that the New York Yankees are the favorite to sign Jorge Soler in Goldstein’s eyes, but it doesn’t really matter unless and until the name is signed on the dotted line.
