Gary A. Vasquez-US PRESSWIRE

I’m sure that most, if not all, of you are well aware by now that the Texas Rangers submitted the winning bid for the right to negotiate with Yu Darvish.  The Texas Rangers won the bidding with a $51.7 million blind bid.  I would be lying if I said I wasn’t disappointed.  I’ve mentioned numerous times that I thought the investment was worth the risk for the New York Yankees – especially since the posting fee is not counted against the payroll.  There hasn’t been much indication of what type of contract Yu Darvish will receive, but I don’t think people will be surprised if the total commitment runs close to $120 million.  I don’t know what the New York Yankees saw or didn’t see from Yu Darvish, but obviously they weren’t aggressive enough to bring him to the Bronx.

As I mentioned, I’m a bit disappointed with how the Darvish sweepstakes shook out, but I do have faith in the Yankees’ scouting.  The risks – while I was willing to see the Yankees assume them – are significant.  The last thing that we would want to see is another regrettable contract on the books.  We’ll have to see if that is what Darvish’s deal turns out to be two or three seasons down the line.  I’m over it at this point, but the only thing that would absolutely infuriate me is if the Yankees go out and trade away a top prospect for a lame starting pitcher (John Danks).  I’ll be seriously hot if that happens.  There is no indication of any trade(s) going down at this time so there is no need to raise my blood pressure…not for now at least.
