Five weeks into the 2010 NFL season and we can officially say there are no more undefeated teams left since the Kansas City Chiefs fell to the Indianapolis Colts last Sunday.
At this point, it’s hard to distinguish a Super Bowl favorite with all of the surprise teams that have emerged so far this season. And of course, there are the teams who many expected to make a Super Bowl run–like the Vikings and Cowboys–that have struggled all season.
Once again, thanks to Johnny Crosskey from BucsPost.com and Jeric Griffin of TheCowboysCentral.com for their contributions for this list. Without further ado, here are the 2010 NFL Power Rankings for Week 5 from www.RantSports.com:
1. Baltimore Ravens (2): The stifling defensive play continues for the ageless Ray Lewis and Baltimore’s unit. The reemergence of Ray Rice has the Ravens flying high.
2. Atlanta Falcons (1): While most of the credit goes to Matt Ryan and the offense, it’s time to start recognizing how well the defense performs. Through five games, they’ve allowed just 70 points–which is a big reason why they’re on top of the NFC South.
3. New York Jets (3): While his performance against the Jets (21 of 44 for 191 yards) could be considered a disappointment, Mark Sanchez has still yet to throw an interception this season. As a team, the Jets have just one turnover so far in 2010.
4. Pittsburgh Steelers (4): The Steelers could emerge as one of the top teams in football now that Ben Roethlisberger is back from suspension. The struggling passing game should improve with his return.
5. New England Patriots (7): A bye week and the departure of Randy Moss have many people anxious to see New England back in action. Trust me, Belichick and Brady have a post-Moss plan.
6. Indianapolis Colts (8): Indy is no longer the high-scoring fantasy football type team anymore. However, Peyton Manning continues to find ways to win. As long as the Sheriff is in town, the Colts will be all right.
7. Chicago Bears (12): It’s hard to believe a team can still win when their quarterback throws just 32 yards and four interceptions. Thank goodness for Matt Forte and a strong defense.
8. New Orleans Saints (5): The last few weeks have shown how important Reggie Bush and Pierre Thomas (or an actual running game) are for the Saints’ offense. Nobody expected them to lose to the Cardinals like that.
9. Green Bay Packers (6): Two losses in one game as Green Bay lost the game to Washington and their star quarterback to a concussion.
10. Washington Redskins (16): It’s time to give the Redskins the credit they deserve. Their three wins all come from teams who made the playoffs last season.
11. Kansas City Chiefs (10): The defense shut down Peyton Manning–which says a lot. Still, Matt Cassel and the offense will need to play better if this team has any shot at winning the AFC West.
12. New York Giants (21): Another dominating win for the G-Men. A solid defensive performance and the continuous development of Hakeem Nicks have the Giants on the rise.
13. Houston Texans (9): Another blowout loss against an NFC East team. Houston desperately needs all its receivers healthy and Matt Schaub to show up.
14. Philadelphia Eagles (17): Good for Kevin Kolb to get a big road win after the type of season he’s been through. Unfortunately, the defensive injuries continue to pile up for this team.
15. Tennessee Titans (19): Talk about a huge win on the road for the Titans. This team has just as good of a chance to win the AFC South as the other 3-2 teams.
16. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (23): Alright–it’s time to give the Bucs some credit after that fourth-quarter comeback against the Bengals. Everyone was waiting for a win against a “contender” and they certainly did.
17. Jacksonville Jaguars (22): A few weeks ago, David Garrard’s job was in jeopardy after two horrendous performances against the Chargers and Eagles. Over the last two weeks, he’s looked phenomenal and has the Jags in a four-way tie in the AFC South.
18. Miami Dolphins (11): A bye week might do a lot for Miami. The talent is there, but the chemistry is not. A matchup against the Rodgers-less Packers is a must-win.
19. San Diego Chargers (13): One of the most inconsistent teams in the league is kicking themselves after a loss to Oakland. The Chargers have the pieces, but not the wins.
20. Arizona Cardinals (24): It’s pretty impressive the Cardinals put up 30 points against the defending Super Bowl Champions without one offensive touchdown. Hey, a win is a win–no matter how it’s done.
21. Cincinnati Bengals (18): Two-straight losses against teams they should have beat. One bad decision to pass on a 3rd and 13 towards the end of the game with a seven-point lead will haunt Carson Palmer and Marvin Lewis for the rest of the season.
22. Dallas Cowboys (14): Dallas mustered 511 yards of total offense and managed to lose again. Last place in the NFC East is not where the Cowboys expected to be heading into Week 6 at Minnesota.
23. Minnesota Vikings (15): Nobody expected the Vikings to be 1-3 at this point in the season. Forget all of the sexting distractions surrounding Brett Favre–Minnesota should be more concerned about his elbow bursitis.
24. Oakland Raiders (28): A big win over San Diego has the bay area all abuzz. A big game from Michael Bush in Darren McFadden’s absence proved the Raiders’ ground game. A great matchup at home against the 49ers awaits.
25. Denver Broncos (20): Denver lost, but Kyle Orton and Brandon Lloyd are for real. A big game between these two will beat most defenses besides the Ravens.
26. Seattle Seahawks (26): At this point in the season, it’s still hard to figure out the Seahawks. After their embarrassing loss to the Rams two weeks ago, Seattle can prove themselves as a contender with a win over the 4-1 Bears this weekend.
27. Detroit Lions (30): It was obvious the Lions were due for a big win after the first four games of the season. Hopefully, Calvin Johnson’s shoulder doesn’t become a bigger issue.
28. St. Louis Rams (25): A two-game win streak is a distant memory after a 44-6 blowout loss to the Lions. The loss of Mark Clayton for the season isn’t good news for Sam Bradford.
29. Cleveland Browns (29): Congrats Colt McCoy–you earned your first career NFL start this weekend thanks to the Browns quarterback injuries. Unfortunately, his first start has to be against the Steelers.
30. San Francisco 49ers (27): At 0-5, the so-called “NFC West favorites” appear to be in a bit of trouble. It’s too bad their backup quarterback is just another former No. 1 pick who turned out to be a bust.
31. Carolina Panthers (30): You know it’s bad when your defense picks off the opposing quarterback four times and limits him to just 32 yards–and loses the game. To say Carolina’s offense is awful would be an understatement considering they’ve managed to score just 52 points the first five games this season.
32. Buffalo Bills (32): Ryan Fitzpatrick isn’t good, but he’s better than Trent Edwards was. Who knows how a bye week will affect the league’s worst team.
