Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick must have a short term memory problem. Recently on 97.5 The Fanatic’s Mike Missanelli show, Vick was asked about being listed #70 on the NFL network’s Top 100 player rankings. Vick replied by saying, “It’s a joke.”
The reality was that the 2011 season was a big step back for Michael Vick. Before the 2011 season began, Vick signed a hefty $100 million contract. With a load of pro-bowl caliber free agent acquisitions, a “Dream Team” moniker and a talented core group, the Eagles felt that 2011 was the year for a championship run.
The result was a disappointing 8-8 season. There were many attributable factors for the mediocrity, perhaps none greater than Michael Vick. Michael Vick struggled with his performance and his inevitable durability issues. Vick fell back to his old habits of holding on to the ball for too long, forcing passes into imaginary windows and absorbing huge hits.
Vick only managed to start 13 out of the 16 games in 2011. He compiled 3303 yards, 18 touchdowns and a 59.8 completion percentage. On the flip side, Vick threw 14 interceptions and fumbled the football often (five giveaways). Michael showed a lack of fundamental discipline that an elite NFL quarterback needs to have.
Philip Rivers, Peyton Manning, Matthew Stafford, Cam Newton, Eli Manning, Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, Drew Brees and Ben Roethlisberger are ranked ahead him. That makes him about the ninth ranked quarterback in the NFL.
Michael Vick must reflect upon why the Eagles finished 8-8. The offense moved the ball at will and put up big points, but the Eagles led the NFL in turnovers, many at the hand of Michael Vick. It is not all on Michael Vick, but it does start from the top. The quarterback. The leader. The #70 ranked player in the NFL.
