Apparently Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Scott Linehan said the following about Matt Stafford “I don’t know where Peyton was after four years, but I think Matt’s definitely on track to be one of the best quarterbacks to ever play the position. We’ll see when it’s all said and done, but he’s really taken a lot on. We put a lot on him as well.” I’m sorry Linehan, but you’re wrong; Stafford is not going to be one the best quarterbacks to ever play the position.
First off, before Lions fans jump on me, I think Stafford is good. In his young career, he already has 11,846 passing yards and 77 touchdowns. Those are impressive numbers. Stafford is also 24 so he is on track to be a good quarterback. Best quarterback to ever play the position? I don’t think so.
To even be in the same sentence for the best quarterback ever is a bit crazy. That means that Stafford is going to be better than Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Aaron Rodgers, Joe Montana, and Dan Marino. Does anyone think that Stafford can be in the same sentence as these quarterbacks? Don’t get me started on Stafford’s fundamentals which are terrible.
Like I said, Stafford is good and he might even be one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL but not the best to ever play the position. Stafford has some things to accomplish before reaching that level. He has to help bring the Lions to the playoffs consistently. Stafford also has to at least go to a Super Bowl like all of the best quarterbacks to play the position have done.
I’m not sure if Linehan was just saying what he said about Stafford to help his confidence or if he just said it for media attention. Either way, it was a dumb thing to say.
